If Some of the Bigger organizations would do events at smaller tracks you would think that would be a win win situation.
Cool old tracks like Black Hawk Farms, Roebling, Ive never been to CMP but it looks nice from the videos and others I cant think of might be a way to boost the sport to the thinner wallet types.
VDCA does a great job but lack of turnout has lost the sept Roebling event.
A few events a year with a $250.00 (i may be dreaming)entry would be very tempting. at these events we wouldnt need any Dinners or featured quests (that I assume cost money?) Just Racers wanting to race.
Maybe instead of a Gimmick race have a mechanical contest for all Drivers. How to read a Micrometer ? or a test stand and you have to adjust the exhaust valve on Number 4 cyl before you can drive ? Focus on the gear head driver in all of us.
Rental on the smaller tracks might be only a break even deal but thats better than a loss. Just one of many thoughts that run through my pea size brain every day smile Mike

All of the things you mention and more have been tried over and over again by the "big two" thru the years. The result is always the same.....chirp, chirp.



Not to demean the "small" guys, but they have thrived by doing versions of exactly that.

The big organizations do best with big events at premier venues. Their other events are just fillers.

The people speak by going where they want to. You can't force this...it just happens, and not always for reasons that careful analysis can uncover. Trust me, we have tried to figure this out and it defies conventional wisdom.

Every "new" management team believes they have the answer to "what is wrong with Vintage Racing?" Eventually they either settle into a comfort zone or bail out.

HSR did CMP one time, and it didn't work out well for them. VDCA did a few times, but in Feb., and that didn't work for them well either, they switched the Feb date to Road Atlanta, but after good cold snap that hurt turn out, switched to a July, which turned out to be too hot for a good turn out, now the VDCA race date is in the fall, kinda like the old runoffs, it should work. The Sept. Roebling date is the same weekend as Watkins Glen, so I am sure that hurt that date, and yes it was like a 250 entry fee.

I would love to see a vintage race group go back to CMP, it is a small car handling track, and I have always done real well there. CMP has fell victim to the same thing some other club tracks have, too many race tracks in the region, even SCCA gave up on having nationals at CMP years ago.

Back in the 70s and 80s it was easy, You either Raced SCCA or IMSA, Huge fields at a regional, national or Camel GT. Mike

If the right opportunity comes up (i.e. track date), there is a very good chance VDCA could return to CMP.

It's been awhile but I used to run CMP at least twice a season with NASA plus a couple Turn One events, it's one of the most fun tracks there is, got some speed and some technical, eats tires and brakes but it's not stupid fast. It's definitely a destination/camping track though as there is nothing close by.
The drive to/from Camden gets old real fast, and the motels in Kershaw are sketchy, but I'd run there with a Vintage group.
It's a good set up Friday afternoon and run Sat-Sun track, 3 full days there can be a bit much.
IMO, May and October are the best months to run there.
