What brand of performance shocks do vintage racers prefer? Are Bilstein shocks popular in the racing world?

IMO, this is a big performance item most drop the ball on in vintage. Most are too infatuated with horsepower.

That said, it's one of those things where the better / more aggressive driver you are, the bigger difference they make. If you're driving at 9.9/10 (it's vintage wink ), bounce off curbs, use the rumble strips, etc. Then they will make a huge difference. A lot of people are too slow to really notice a decent set of shocks from a really good set of shocks. Horsepower is noticeable at any talent level.

The only thing governing shocks is remote reservoirs are illegal. There are ways around that.

Bilsteins are good, and they have more than just the street stuff. Afcos work very well if you find the right person to valve them (most are circle track guys, so you need to find someone with road racing experience). Ohlins is the cream-of-the-crop.

Some thoughts on the shocks
1 Most, If not all, people selling and advising on shocks now days recommend
too hard a valving, so beware of the experts. I think this is because of the importance of maintaining a consistent ground clearance on cars with a lot of down force. Most have very little suspension travel and high spring rates so they rely on the shocks to control the dynamic ride height.

2 A lower quality shock valved right is superior to the best shock that is valved wrong. So work on getting it right and don,t worry about the fancy name on it. Do the work on figuring your cars corners weight/un-sprung weights and use that as a guide line.

3. Always error on the soft side. Too much shock leads to a lot of wrong
assumptions about what the car is doing and how to fix it. For instants.
too much rear bump will cause exit power over steer, but too much front rebound and you get exit power under steer. Both will kill lap times.

Mark Donahue said that " shocks don't mean a whole lot in terms of improving
a cars ultimate capability , but they can make a drive feel better.
I have always found this to be true.
