The audio seems wrong for the F1 car motor...sounds like the roadster motors.

Looks like some of the footage was "photo chopped" also.

Most interesting.

The first of three Scarab Formula 1 cars built, chassis GP-1 was used by Reventlow and Ginther in the European rounds of the team's Grand Prix campaigns. It was subsequently rebuilt with one of the Chevrolet V8 engines left over from the sports car program. In this guise it starred in the 1962 Bruce Kessler short 'The Sound of Speed.' Both Daigh and Reventlow can be seen throwing the very potent Scarab around Riverside. The movie even appealed to non-car people and was America's entry in the short feature category of the Cannes Film Festival.

By all accounts Reventlow was very disappointed with his foray into Grand Prix racing after the resounding success of the Chevy powered sports cars.

After his humiliating experience in Formula 1, Reventlow all but lost interest in motor racing. His men only built two more cars; a single seater and a sports car, both mid-engined.

He was so upset, in fact, that he dismantled his team and never raced again.

HERE IS THE WHOLE MOVIE

I think the movie is about Lance's disappointment in the F-1 effort which failed mostly because of lack of power provided by the 2.5L Offenhauser and perhaps a dated chassis.

For whatever reason, they went to the effort of switching to one of the Chevys, even though that would not have been acceptable for F-1. In fact, for 1961, F-1 went to 1.5L motors!

It is hard to say what the point of that experiment was, but at least they proved the car could go much faster. In fact, I think he broke the Riverside track record before they stopped for the day.

He then takes one last look at car in the transporter and closes the door on the whole Scarab experience.

There is a related story that a few years later Chuck Daigh wanted to use the Offy engine in another car so he tore it down and rebuilt it.

While doing so, he discovered that they had been using the wrong valve lash spec.

It should have been 0.002 and they had been setting it at 0.012!

The best power they had been able to get was about 230 hp. With the valves properly adjusted, he immediately got 265 which would have been enough to make the car competitive in 1960!

I'm the fella who posted,on YouTube these three Scarab "F1" clips...of "THE SOUND OF SPEED." My late uncle, who was a buddy to the MEISTER-BRAU Scarab Sports Car Team (out of the Chicago-land area) got it from those blokes...& he passed it on to me. I was told that "Chuckie" Daigh was hell-bend to run at Indy and pressured "Lance-alot" to convert the chassis to compete there. They were "at logger heads re. which power plant (PP) to use...and it never happened.

Here's a short clip witnessing to the Scarab F1's continued presence in competition. There are TWO shown. I KNOW that Orosco's (which/who finished 4th.)sported the F1 engine...the other I suspect not:

A non-subtle dig at the Scarab. One can only hope that the commentator made his feelings known, in the pits & after the event, to "Chuckie Boy" who would have laid waste to "the banger eating/warm beer drinking", smirkish lout.

Spa, Francorchamps, June 1960

After the race, on the trip back to Paris, Reventlow told Daigh, “I was hoping and praying that the car wouldn't start.”
“I don't see how you get in the car if that's the way you feel.” Daigh said.
“It scares the crap out of me,” Reventlow said, “but I think I'll be alright.”
Looking back, Daigh is convinced that Reventlow merely kicked in the clutch at Spa and revved the engine until a rod punched a hole in the block. “From that time on, I don't think he wanted to to race anymore, “Daigh says. “After that, I don't think he thought he could cut it.”
Daigh had no such fear. And now that he finally had the chance to race, he intended to prove that he belonged in F1. His tyres were constantly skirting the white lines marking the edges of the track. On the run up to Les Combes, in fact, he was putting his right-side rubber over the line and onto the grass. And then there was Burnenville (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/20/Spa_1950.jpg), which Daigh calls “the scariest corner in the world,” a down-hill, decreasing radius right-hander taken at 130 mph. This was were Moss came to grief the previous day, and where Daigh was now having problems of his own. “the only way I could get through it was to pitch the car sideways,” he recalls. “When I got to the bottom there was a hump and the car felt like it was going to break, and when it would do that, the front wheels just popped up,” Daigh chuckles.”Every time I'd go through that corner, the flag Marshall would display the yellow because he just KNEW I was going to crash.

*******************************************************************

How slow were The Scarabs? After one practice session, Bruce McLaren walked over and asked Daigh, “Were you going flat-out down the straight?”
“As fast as that son-of-a-bitch will go,” Daigh replied.
McLaren thought it over for a moment, then said, “My, you MUST go quick in the corners.”

Although there is NOT a radical improvement over previous copies (which were 240p.), one can notice better colors and, especially at 720p., a sharper overall presentation. Considering the fact that the original "print" (film stock) is somewhat faded/washed-out, an amateur, "moi", is not going to get it much better...I think...maybe?
AGAIN, my sincere "THANKS!" to my 'French Cousin', Amelie, for allowing me to post this (and others), on her site.

Great job...I never tire of watching that. I had never noticed all the unprotected light poles and such along the track. By looking at the countryside (desert) it is hard to believe that is all housing and strip malls now.

"Le Son de la Vitesse"..."The Sound of Speed"

This was, mes amours, their (Scarab F1 team) 1960 attempt at Formula Libre racing. It was powered by a 350 Chevy engine.
My mentor & God-father, "Hollywood Ronnie", came by this video via his now-deceased uncle "Johnny L.", who was a master mechanician and friend of the Meister Brau Scarab sports car team of the '50's & '60's. They gifted him with this product...as an inducement to relocate to Los Angeles & assist them there.
FYI, Monsieur Chuck Daigh did most of the actual driving !
