On April 29TH. past, The Arcadia Beach of Odessa, Ukraine, was host to that regions' "TATRA GIRL" Festival. Arcadia, a popular tourist place with a large grouping of restaurants, bars, discos, night clubs and other entertainment, proved to be a hospitable and wondrous site for this gala.
{My thanks to Mother (Madame Grigorieva) & Son (Dimitri) who were kind enough to shoot, compile and forward this to me. Mom, who took the short intro. bit, of the T-Girl finalists themselves, had never before used a video camera...and can thus be forgiven for any errors in same. The 15 yr. old Dimitri was, admittedly more interested in the beach happenings, BEFORE the competition actually began. (He states, in his cover letter, that he knew that he had NO chance with the older models, on the stage...but he felt that there WAS a possibility for a kiss with a younger sweetie. Practical lad...}

Few Westerners, seemingly, know of the history of the Tatra Motor Cars...AND, even fewer, after which famous area they took their even more famous name:
THE TATRA MOUNTAINS
A mountain range which forms a natural border between Slovakia and Poland, and are the highest mountain range in the Carpathian Mountains. Tatras occupy an area of (290 sq. mi.), of which the greater part ( 232 sq. mi.) lies in Slovakia, with the highest peak Gerlach at 8710 ft, located north of Poprad. In turn, summit Rysy (8200 ft), located in the north-western part of Tatras, is the highest mountain in Poland. The Tatras are a mountain range of a corrugated nature, originating from the Alpine orogeny, and therefore characterized by a relatively young-look lay of the land, quite similar to the landscape of the Alps, although significantly smaller. It is the highest mountain range within Carpathians. It consists of the internal mountain chains of:
Western Tatras (Slovak: Západné Tatry, Polish: Tatry Zachodnie) Eastern Tatras (Východné Tatry, Tatry Wschodnie), which in turn consist of: the High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry, Tatry Wysokie) and Belianske Tatras (Belianske Tatry, Tatry Bielskie) The overall nature of the Tatras, together with their easy accessibility, makes them a favorite with tourists and researchers. Therefore, these mountains are a popular winter sports area, with resorts such as Zakopane, called also "winter capital of Poland", Poprad and the town Vysoké Tatry (The Town of High Tatras) in Slovakia created in 1999, including former separate resorts: trbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec, and Tatranská Lomnica. The High Tatras, with their 24 (or 25) peaks exceeding 2,500 m above sea level, together with the Southern Carpathians, represent the only form of alpine landscape in the entire 1200 km length of arc of the Carpathians.
The average wind speed on the summits is 6 m/s.
southerly winds on the northern side westerly winds at the base of Tatra (Orawa-Nowy Targ Basin) foehn winds (Polish: halny) most often occur between October and May. They are warm and dry and can cause extensive damage. Maximum wind speed 288 km/h (6 May 1968).[1] On 19 November 2004, large parts of the forests in the southern Slovak part of the High Tatras were damaged by a strong wind storm.[1] Three million cubic metres of trees were uprooted, two people died and several villages were totally cut off. Further damage was done by a subsequent forest fire, and it will take many years until the local ecology is fully recovered.[citation needed]
Temperature Temperatures range from -40 °C (-40 °F) in the winter to 33 °C (91 °F) in warmer months. Temperatures also vary depending on altitude and sun exposure of a given slope. Temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F) last for 192 days on the summits.
Precipitation Highest precipitation figures are recorded on the northern slopes. In June and July monthly precipitation reaches around 250 mm (10 in). Precipitation occurs from 215 to 228 days a year. Thunderstorms occur 36 days a year on average.
We are finishing the preparations for the next event, which will come true at the end of August in village Lány, so I decied to write You.
The main theme of this event is work and life of the front czech designer, Ing. Vaclav Kral. He have designed a lot of projects in different branches, also for automotive industry, including Tatra. For example study of modernization Tatra 613, named Prezident. Picture bellow. But the most interesting is his design for sport car, based od Tatra 613, which was rised up at the end of 80´s and the beginning of 90´s. The car was named Tatra MTX V8, also called Supertatra. The name Tatra was used because of using tuned engine from Tatra 613, but with exception this, the whole car was made by company Metalex (MTX).
The basic idea was to build around 20 cars for its special shampionship. But after Velvet revolution there was no serious interest in this idea, so they introducted the serial car in 1991 in Prague and started to prepair it for commercial sale. At the end was build only 4 cars, 2 are in Czech republic, 1 is in USA, 1 is in Italy.
I think this car is very interesting, especially for members of Vintageracingrules forum. The comprehensive article and few photos bellow. Other ones is possible to find at Google.
By the way, Kanye West have drive it in movie Runaway.
This black car, the last made one, is situated in museum of sport cars in Lany now and is also the main point of our event.
We have invitated Ing. Jiri Kral, son of Ing. Vaclav Kral and co-author of the car, to talk about beginnings of the project, show first drawings and so on. The car will be prepaired specialy for us out of the museum to photo shooting, starting up and few short rides. Also we will visit the museum of sport cars with his manager, mister Richard Trajbold. For Your interest, there is situated whole new replica of Tatra 603 T2 B5 Marathon de la Route 1967 and replica of Tatra 602 Tatraplan Sport. We also will visit the museum of Tomas Gariggue Masaryk, who was the first Czechoslovak president and have started the tradition that czech presidents stay at Lany castle.
Of course, all the members of Vintageracingrules forum are heartily invitated. If anyone will like to join, we will be very happy about that... Oficial materials will be prepaired in few days, so I will send You them as well.
With best regards from Brno, Czech Republic

CAR INSURANCE COMMERCIAL
A very recent (March 2012) T.V. spot warning us that the Kooperativa Co. even insures motorists who may be ancient, addle-brained and unable to properly shift (BTW, did you know that Tatra, during the T603's life span, NEVER installed an Automatic Transmission...even as an option?.)

'34 T77 "RACER." For almost a year, I have been scouring the world, looking under most every moss-covered rock (as well as the barren ones), for to locate film footage of a T77 (or a T87) on the track...racing. Not surprisingly, I was gruesomely unsuccessful as apparently no one alive today has ever seen one race...nor imagined that they did...NOR cares to!
WELL, I suppose that I do...enough to look for, then create this piece of fluff. The technically intriguing thing 'bout it is the last, simulation bit...which was created, in DOS, by a handful of Prague Univ. T77 fans. And "driven about", on 80 yr. old bias ply tires, being steered by employing THE ARROW KEYS! V-E-R-Y difficult thing to pull off...
NOTE what appears to be a First Generation TRAQMATE.
Does anyone know the track on which this lil' drama is being played out?
T77 & T87 Trans-Axle, etc. Simple solution (simple-headed?) to the problem of excessive positive camber...non-attached, stainless steel, flying buttresses. Those backing plates must 'ave been of stout material.

Oft times I am asked (sometimes by complete strangers) if any videos exist, of the 603, which show it motoring about for a wee-decent amount of time. Likewise, if there are any other (other than the popular orange/black beasts) competing these days. Well, a jaunty "Tip-Of-The-Hat" to an English Cousin: Dr. Donald "Ducky" Duckworth, D.D.S., from Surrey, England, who was so kind as to alert me to this Road-test clip...which shows a recently restored, from a massive warehouse fire, "black mariah", THAT IS, as we breathe, being stripped....and refitted to compete in the British Vintage series, the VSCC...next season. Ducky, whose diggs are a few football (American) throws distant from the race preparers garage, promises to shortly make a pious-pilgrimage there...and to provide video of that holy proceeding...as well as it being campaigned. Full sponsorship HAS been secured and it appears a certainty that we WILL see it trading-paint.
{Oh, I do hope they will continue to use those Cadillac Tail/Brake lamp lens...as-well-as the (Oldsmobile?) hood ornament. The Dashboard Heart should be a keeper, too! Perhaps it could be illuminated and used as a "Red Line" indicator?}

TATRA FIT THE BATTLE OF JERICO...TOO!
(Dateline Hollywood): As a JUST LEARNED aside (via a shipping assistant of Jerico Performance Products), the race team (owner/driver) WILL be installing a made-for-Corvair, "JERICHO" trans-axle in the race prepared 603, that is shown and spoken of in the preceding clip...under the rubric of Safety. It seems that the VSCC considers the stock crash-box (and its' steering-column linkage) as an out-right danger, to life and limb...while downshifting under race conditions!

During the early part of this day (Sept. 19, 2012), while all were going about their daily concerns & obligations, this TATRA Thread's (TT) "hit-odometer" topped the 25K. mark. When this was birthed June 2011, I envisioned about 250 views...on those days when my mind might 'ave been "elevated", maybe 1K. Period. And, mostly from the American populace. I was gruesomely wrong on both counts...as just the reverse has come to be. But(t), perhaps it was Kismet, as most here a bouts, have never seen a 603 compete, nor expended 10 sec.'s worth of thought re. these Vintage Racer T-cars...unlike Europe...and even certain sectors of Asia, as well as India. In point of fact, it CAN be said that the VRR Forum (with it's players), due to this collection of vids, comments & observations, are now known in cultural geographies worldwide, that most of us are grossly unfamiliar with. That some of the good people of these wildly diverse areas, "know your faces" and exploits better than many of their country-men...and gals. One of these mysterious places, to our eyes, is the small Swiss Village of Oberulmiz...a locale wherein every August the good fans hold a picnic celebrating the Tatra Motor Cars! (Not many sandy ocean/sea beaches handy.) BUT, they DO have bikini's, and a variety of water, which is, I fancy, all that's really required:
This erstwhile competition has been an integral facet of "Da Picnic" since 1972. It is said that, every-so-often, one or more of the racers will come up short, in the end...or the top...i.e., they will have lost their top &/OR bottoms! These are called, "The Lucky Years." Thus, each year prior, many (mostly teen boys and old dreamers) can be heard to shout, "Hey, let's go out the the drainage ditches, and get lucky!...and see Something!" But(t) alas, "LUCK" will not always fall in their "horn-dog" laps. A damn grand lesson for them to learn. As an interesting aside, the demure-gal who's the most unlucky, in the manner just described, ALWAYS receives a "Hard-Luck" Trophy/Plaque that is larger, and more ornate, than the winner's...as is only right-and-proper.

Carrying the TATRA Racing-Banner Forward!...the 4-Whl. Drive, 1000 HP., V12-Biturbo, 815! (...and YES, it IS Aircooled...and ingests Diesel .)
This 130 MPH, all-whl. drive Tatra is an air-cooled, OHV, currently 780 cu. in. 90° V8 120 x 140 mm diesel engine with direct fuel injection. It is turbocharged by two Holset WasteGate turbochargers, and equipped with an intercooler placed directly over the engine. The engine is equipped with a mechanically controlled in-line Bosch injection pump. Its roller crankshaft bolted together from individual segments belongs among a host of unique technical solutions. An electronically controlled, 14 speed, gear shifting arrangement - the driver uses a joystick just pre-sets a gear speed, and after the clutch is engaged, the speed shifting is carried out. The driver is informed about the shifted speed gear by means of a dashboard display. Tatra trucks are very successful in rally raids, notably in Dakar where Karel Loprais achieved victory 6 times with the T815.
Wishing of beautiful Autumn to You , as well as to all members of Vintageracerules forum
