As appealing as the picture above is, of a 603 sharing the spotlight with "The Atomium" at the 1958 Brussels's World Fair (it WAS crowned "Motor Car of The Fair"), it becomes of secondary interest when one learns about the couple shown...and their adventure...with the buggy. They, near the closing of this gathering, provided acute, and meaningful, "em-bare-ass-ment" to the Czech government...by defecting to the West. To merry-olde England. With the Tatra...the first model, of it's mark, in Britain. It was only after a few decades, that the Western world came to the knowledge that the gal had been the part-time model AND wife of the Head-Commissar of the "Czech Directorate for Internal Security and Public Order", while the gent at the wheel was an agent for British Intelligence: "The Circus". (These facts have NEVER been widely disseminated in the Eastern Bloc) During the height of The Cold War, this event caused, in the C.R., many heads-to-roll...indeed!
(You ask 'bout The Happy Couple? Oh, they were wed, had a half-dozen kids...and did return, for to reunite with parents and such, numerous times after the thawing out of hostilities. The family STILL has the 603, too!)
{My "THANKS!" to fellow member and Tatra aficionado, J. FARR, who tipped me off to this photograph. As many are aware, Johnny & I are at many of the Tatra Inter-Continental Conventions (T.I.C.), & have become the VRRF representatives at those august assemblages...I think, as he & I can recall scant details of any of them. Just happy to, afterwards, find our way home.}

Earlier this very day, while in telephonic intercourse with a few gal-pals ("pítelkyne") in the Czech Republic, I was pleased to learn that a number of Tatra-groups there have already, this past weekend, begun celebrating THIS Tatra Thread (TT), & its hitting 50K. on our odometer: And why shouldn't they...as those good Guys & Gals ARE a major reason for this success! Blahopejeme! (Congratulations!)

A unique prototype Tatra 603 resurrected from the dead!
"She was, is and remains the only specimen in the world. A Tatra 603 that was to supposed to become the successor to the popular "estsetrojky". There was only two prototypes built (in 1962), one of which was soon converted into an ambulance. The new type was lighter and also address deficiencies estsettrojky, such as fuel tanks, which, when stronger frontal collision slightly crackled and burned the car," said historian and former director of the Tatra Museum Karl Rosenkranz. The biggest change, however, was the body that has obviously had not counted on the typical shape proudnicovým Tatra. And what happened to the prototype? After a few years he bought from the company over worker Sale of car repair. Because there were no spare parts, gradually in order to maintain operability much changed. Finally, the car shut down. It was bought by another fan of old cars, maybe it would fix itself, but soon realized that it would be very difficult and costly . Mainly, however, beyond its capabilities "Sometime in 2006, gave the newspaper ad and the car was bought from a veteran collector Fort Hungary," said Vítězslav Hinner, head of the restoration company Ecorra Kopřivnice-Lubiny. Now the company gave the new owner a complete renovation of a unique car. "We had no idea what to expect. Renovation prototype and series production car is entirely different," said Hinner. While the old, but usually there are a number of cars produced spare parts and restorers can look into other cars, the prototype is starting from scratch. Although the original car remained still enough original parts, many of them have had to do all over again and literally on the knee. "Since the start of repairs to the handover has been five years., But we obviously still nerenovovali. We had other orders, getting photos and much more," said Hinner. How much repair cost and the value of a car is now Hinner wanted to say. "Take this, we worked 4,500 hours, nothing else really can not tell." http://auto.idnes.cz/podivejte-se-na-pro...rava-zpravy_jog

The 603 "Wedding Wagons"...
Venue: Chateau Karlova Koruna, Chlumec nad Cildlinou, Czech Republic Date: 27. 7. 2012 Production: Videostudio Milan evík videosevcik.cz facebook.com/videosevcik
Although my marriage has survived nearly half a century, due entirely to the saintly demeanor of my spouse, after viewing this tidy scene I'm keen to "Renew Our Vows!"... but only if a horde of 603's are witnesses-in-attendance.

1925 Tatra T12 "Targa Florio"
Tatra 12 is a model of vintage automobile made by Czech manufacturer Tatra. It was manufactured between 1923 and 1926. The gearbox has 4 speeds (+reverse) and the engine is on the top of it, while both are mounted on the front of the backbone tube. The engine is a petrol flat two cylinder which is cooled by an onslaught of air. Thanks to this the expensive and heavy radiators could be avoided - this was an excellent idea at the time, when antifreeze was rather problematic.
Targa Florio The Targa Florio version was quite different from the serial production models. The engine and the bodywork were changed the most, but also the chassis was altered by changing the front axle. The cylinders were made from a special alloy, which allowed it to work even under extreme heat. The modified engine had about 30 hp (22 kW) at 5000 rpm (the standard version had about half). The car had also the tachometer, unlike the production version. The front axle was similar to the one of Tatra 17 with swinging half axles (standard version had half axles only at the rear, while front was solid). The bodywork itself was built in a manner similar to the aeroplane design of the era - from plywood; only the front bonnet was made from aluminium plate. This made the body weigh only around 25 kg (55 lb), while the whole car weighed 560 kg (1,200 lb). The car was able to reach speeds up to 120 km/h (75 mph) (almost twice of the standard version) and it therefore needed better brakes. To allow easier re-fuelling the fuel tank with capacity of 60 L (16 US gal) was place behind the rear seats. To its advantage Tatra 12 didn't need stops. The Targa Florio cars took part in many races, i.e. in Stuttgart, Ecce Homo, or the Great Russian contest of reliability. In 1925 debuting Tatra 12s took part in the Sicilian Targa Florio race, after which the race models were later named. The two cars driven by Fritz Huckel and Karel Sponer took both first and second position in the category of under 1100 cc. Huckel had beaten the track record by 26 minutes and Sponer had beaten it by 21 minutes.

Tatra...To The Moon!
Although some will be flummoxed over this being in Russian, it is, nevertheless a tidy little piece showing Moscow's fondness for the work-a-day 603 sled...not a cherried-out show car. Oh, and if my Russian hasn't gone-to-rust, 'bout the cutest quip this gent utters (at 2:06), "If we had used this capsule during "The Space Race", WE would have been first to the moon...and gone in style...6 of our brave cosmonauts with a large picnic basket !" The Tatra MTX V8 is a pretty interesting vehicle, namely because it can best be described as a communist supercar. Designed and built by Czechoslovakian coachbuilder Tatra in the early 1990s, and not to be confused with the Tatra-built, roofless Skoda that also bears the MTX name, the Tatra MTX V8 was a proper mid-engine sports car powered by a -- you guessed it -- four-cam V8.
Perhaps its because the car was built behind the Iron Curtain, but finding official specs on the Tatra MTX V8 is a bit tough. Though Tatra shows the vehicle on its homepage, no information on the car is anywhere to be found on the official company website. Our research shows the Tatra MTX V8 to be powered by one of two air-cooled V8 engines: a 220-horsepower, 3.5-liter and a 300-horsepower 4.0-liter. The MTX V8 with the 4.0-liter is said to be capable of 0-60 times in the five second range, and this car did set an official Czechoslovakian speed record in 1997 when it hit 161 mph (260 km/h).
Penned by Czech automobile designer Vaclav Kral, the Tatra MTX V8 definitely looks the part of a 1990s supercar. The proportions and shape are definitely era-correct; it has the snub nose, bubble canopy, side vents, and sweeping rear end seen on its more popular contemporaries like the Jaguar XJ220 and McLaren F1. The hood and boot are each one solid, molded piece and swing open like they were designed for an old-school CanAm race car. The scissor doors, which swing up to reveal two racing buckets -- each with a four-point racing harness -- complete the 1990s supercar design checklist.
So now that our appetite is whetted for some Communist Bloc machinery, the next step is to figure out how to get behind the wheel of a Tatra MTX V8 instead of, say, a Lada 2105. Well, apparently it would help to be either Kanye, a high-ranking (former) KGB officer or a new-money Russian oil baron. Only five Tatra MTX V8s were ever built, meaning that the chances of anyone else driving the car are slim to none. Youd have an easier time acquiring a more common vehicle of the era, such as a McLaren F1. Or a parade float of Michael Jackson's head.

A few nights back, whilst in mid-bath, a phone call arrived from So. Germany (nr. the border, I believe). The voice announced itself as belonging to Günther Klink, the Secretary de jure of the largest German Tatra Fan Klub...well!, I would have stood-at-attention but modesty prevented me...he said how THAT was OK. Anyhow, he was calling, pleading that I secure another of the hugely popular "Tatra Girl" posts. His parting statement, & of those shouting approval in his presence (which gave rise to the thought that they had wrapped themselves about a heroic amount of lager), was: "Ein Mann tut nicht Live By-Autos allein!" ("A Man Does Not Live By Motorcars Alone!")
SO!...here we go! If the truth were known, Although no T & A will be shown, An almost grander sight is presented... That of a sweetie that can twist-a-wrench...open-ended! Maybe this Ceské krásy [Czech Beauty] is even adept at over-hauling the entire lump-of-fun engine! Ho Boy...I'm becoming aroused!
Tatra girl :-D
Who out there has been gifted with a loving wife or gal-pal, who carry's out most of the maintenance (overhaul) chores on their buggies...race machines? IS THERE ONE SO BLESSED!? Please, come closer...we wish to bask in your Good Fortune. *******************************************************
